Last Fall I purchased 2 laptop lunches for my son to take to school. Our school is zero-waste so I wanted to start his elementary days on the right foot. The Bento lunch systems are eco-friendly as the containers are reusable so plastic baggies and prepackaged individual servings are eliminated. I ordered the Laptop Lunch System because it is phthalate free, bisphenol-A (BPA) free, and lead free. The materials used are the safer plastics: polypropylene (#5) and polyethylene (#2). Also, our says it was made in the USA, California to be exact. The insulated bag is made in China though.
I am a huge fan of a dishwasher and this Laptop Lunch system is top rack dishwasher safe. The only problem I have found is that the lid warped while being washed (we don’t use the dry cycle) and now when it is closed the edges don’t stay down. This isn’t a huge deal as it shuts enough that his sandwich won’t fall out while in the insulated carrying case.
The set came with a water bottle but since we don’t use plastic water bottles, I was pleased to figure out that a 12 oz Klean Kanteen bottle fit perfectly in the water bottle space. I also put a non-toxic ice pack into the insulated carrying case so his lunch and water will stay cool.
I love that I can put ½ a sandwich, fruit, veggies, and pretzels into the container and they stay separated.
This is one of the lidded inner containers that I used for snack time (apricot, cherry tomatoes, and bunny crackers). I liked sending this separate from the lunch box but it got lost within a week or so. A tip is to use the silicone muffin liners as dividers so you can fit more items in each inner container. I purchased hearts and other fun shapes that I rotate throughout the week.
All in all, I do like our laptop lunch system. It was hard finding an eco-friendly, non-toxic lunchbox and I do think there could be a better system out there someday but as for this Fall, I am sending my children to school with their bento style Laptop Lunches.
